Questions and answers
What is GEO and will AI replace SEO?
GEO is optimising content for answers generated by language models. It does not replace SEO, because those models draw on the same web index, but it rewards a different format: a direct answer in the first two sentences instead of a run-up.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes to have your page cited when a model answers someone's question. In the first case the user clicks and lands on your site. In the second they often do not click at all, but they see your name as the source.
The technical foundation is shared: the site has to be reachable by crawlers, fast and understandable. The difference is in how the content is shaped.
What actually works
A direct answer up front. A paragraph that takes three sentences to say anything specific will not be lifted and quoted. One that opens with a number or an unambiguous statement will be.
Specifics that can be checked: tool names, prices, timelines, thresholds. Models prefer content that risks something, because it can be verified.
Structured data and an unambiguous author identity. Generative engines are readier to attribute content to a person they can confirm in several independent places.
Access for AI crawlers. Check that robots.txt does not block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Blocking the last one writes you out of Gemini's answers.
What cannot be bought
There is no submission form that makes ChatGPT or Perplexity start recommending your company. Anyone selling that is selling nothing.
There is also no rank tracker the way classic SEO has one. You measure it differently: ask the models about your field and your city, note who they cite, and repeat monthly.
So is SEO dying
No, and that is not a hedge. A search engine with AI answers still needs sources, and it takes them from the same index as ordinary results. A page that does not rank will not be cited, because the model will not find it.
What changes is the mix of traffic. Some informational queries now end with an answer on the results page and nobody clicks. Queries with buying intent, the ones you care about, still end in a visit.
One thing to remember
Do both, because it is the same work in a different format. Start with one rule: every section answers in its first two sentences, then expands.
